Mother-of-pearl inlay is a decorative technique in which the pearlescent parts of turban shells or abalone shells are polished with a whetstone, brought to a uniform thickness, cut into patterns, and inlaid or adhered to a lacquered surface. The shell is used for its beautiful blue or white shimmer, which changes depending on how the light strikes it.
The lacquered surface is carved to match the pattern, and the shell is affixed with lacquer paste. Fine line decorations may also be carved into the shell itself.
Mother-of-pearl inlay is also applied to wood. In the Nara period, it was used alongside wood mosaic and tortoiseshell; by the Heian period, it was used together with maki-e lacquerware to enhance its effect.
