Complete Bruckner Symphonies, Günter Wand Conducting 10-CD Set

Josef Anton Bruckner (September 4, 1824 – October 11, 1896) was an Austrian composer.
In the history of Western music, he is generally classified as a late Romantic. His compositional techniques are said to have been influenced by Beethoven and Schubert, while his orchestration and harmony were influenced by Wagner. He influenced later composers such as Gustav Mahler and Franz Schmidt, and was among the first to recognize Hans Rott's talent.
Some critics, however, point to his distinctive place within the late Romantic period. One distinguishing feature is his limited connection with opera and literature, as suggested by the fact that he left no operas and by his cool reaction, reportedly expressing incomprehension of Wagner's music drama Die Walküre with the question, “Why was Brünnhilde burned to death?” (In fact, the flames are raised around her for protection; she is not burned to death.) Another is the way his compositional style often reflects the thinking of an organist.
In the history of the symphony, he is often compared with Mahler for his many works requiring exceptionally long performance times.
He is also often regarded as a rival to the contemporary composer Johannes Brahms.

Günter Wand (January 7, 1912 – February 14, 2002) was a German conductor born in Elberfeld in the Rhineland region of Germany (now part of Wuppertal, renamed after Elberfeld merged with Barmen). While specializing in German music by composers such as Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, and Bruckner, he also actively performed modern works by composers such as Stravinsky and Messiaen.
