"Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" (Fugaku Sanjūrokkkei) is Katsushika Hokusai's masterpiece and a representative work of ukiyo-e landscape art. "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" and "Fine Wind, Clear Sky" are particularly famous. This series was first published by Nishimura Eijūdō around the early years of the Tenpō era.
Initially, as the title suggests, 36 prints were published, but they were so highly acclaimed that 10 more were added later, eventually making the series 46 prints. (The original 36 prints are called "Omote Fuji," while the additional 10 are called "Ura Fuji.") Although Mount Fuji is depicted in all the prints, the 46 unique depictions of Mount Fuji never tire the viewer. The series also includes monochrome works known as "Aizuri-e" and features a wide variety of creative approaches.
At the time, there was a deep devotion to Mount Fuji among the people. "Fuji-ko" groups, who made pilgrimages to Mount Fuji together, were highly popular, and artificial hills modeled after Mount Fuji, called "Fujizuka," were built throughout Edo. It was within this social climate that "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" was born and became an explosive hit. Mount Fuji has always occupied a special place in the hearts of the Japanese people. "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" transcends the realm of mere landscape art, depicting the landscape of the Japanese people's hearts. Please enjoy Hokusai's 46 depictions of Mount Fuji.
